There's a really easy way now for children to sign up for a web 2.0 service, without having to use a 'real' email address - using VoiceThread or GoogleDocs is going to be easier now I've discovered this site! They are disposable email addresses that create temporary mailboxes, so you can easily register on a site that needs an email address. When signing up for a service, simply use a mailcatch 'address' you have created, and use the site to check for your confirmation email, and click through to activate the service! No spam, child protection issues, as the children cannot reply to any messages, and they are also temporary - the messages are not kept for long, by all accounts. Brilliant!
